Put the Lime in the Coconut: A review of Podcasters Paradise Cruise & Royal Caribbean’s Independence of the Seas

We were in a van cruising up a mountain to the Good Hope Estate Park in Chukka, Jamaica when our tour guide pointed out the abundance of coconuts growing on the overarching trees that were surrounding us as we drove up the windy roads. “Do you know the real story behind the song, ‘Coconut?” he asked. He then proceeded to sing the chorus, “You put the lime in the coconut and drink them both together. Put the lime in the coconut and you feel better.” Everyone nodded in familiarity of the song originally recorded by Harry Nilsson made popular by Jimmy Buffet.

Setting off for adventures in Jamaica, mon!

“Coconuts are very healing,” our tour guide continued. “Coconuts heal your body even more than your doctor’s pills.” Of course, this is when my ears perked up! He told us the story that the song was written about the premise that combining limes with coconut are an easy way to instantly lower blood pressure, reduce stress and is proven to have many other health benefits. I love finding out new natural cures so as soon as we got back to California you better believe I was at the Beverly Hills Farmers market looking for fresh limes and coconuts to make this stress-relieving concoction. It was surprisingly delicious and definitely helped my jet-lag so that was an added benefit.

If you are a regular reader of this blog or a frequent listener of our podcast you know that I geek out about three key things- the healing power of nutrition, turning your passion your career and documentary filmmaking/photojournalism – specifically the power of media and storytelling to inspire others to take action.

My #PodcastCruise trip combined all three of these passions and I am so excited to share my experience with you! This is my review of the Podcaster’s Paradise Cruise which took place on Royal Caribbean’s Independence of the Seas. I’ll cover the cruise, my takeaways from the conference, and how I managed to find the vegan faire on this incredible trip!

Sunset on Royal Caribbean's Independence of the Seas

THE CRUISE:

The cruise took place from Nov. 1-7th, 2015 and left from Port Everglades in Ft. Lauderdale Florida. The itinerary includes a day and a half at sea followed by three stops to Haiti, Jamaica and Grand Cayman. The final day is a day at sea where you cruise back to Florida. My husband and I had gotten married a year ago and still hadn’t gone on our honeymoon but wanted to do a small trip for our 1-year anniversary. But, then I found out about the Podcast Paradise Cruise which was a vacation with fellow podcasters that included a conference with some of the biggest names in the entrepreneur and podcasting world hosted by John Lee Dumas and Kate Erickson of the popular site, Entrepreneur on Fire

These two had been my online mentors & inspiration for launching our show, The Food Heals Podcast, so I jumped at the chance to meet them in person and learn from them in such a unique environment. So I convinced my hubby that this was what we needed to do for our 1-year anniversary trip (and hey it’s tax deductible for my biz so really we’re saving money, right!) And off we went!

Being hailed as “Sex and the City for Food,” The Food Heals Podcast brings together experts in the field of nutrition, health and healing to teach you the best-kept natural secrets to being a hotter, healthier, happier YOU!

The Food Heals Podcast is hosted by Allison Melody and Suzy Hardy – two self-proclaimed natural chicks who will rock your world and change your beliefs about health! This sexy, savvy duo provides eco-friendly advice on a variety of issues including the healing power of nutrition, living authentically, turning your passion into your career, choosing the best natural health and beauty products, the benefits of a plant-based diet and so much more!

Interior of Royal Caribbean's Independence of the Seas

The Independence of the Seas is really quite spectacular. When you enter the ship you really have no idea how expansive it is. They have 4 pools, 6 whirlpools, a spa, a fitness center, a library, a surf simulator, an ice-skating rink, shopping, a mini golf course, a theater, a casino, an art gallery, hot tubs, a business center, 22 bars, clubs, and lounges and they have a freaking a rock climbing wall! You really have to see it to believe it. It reminds me of a high-end Vegas hotel and casino. But… you know- floating.

THE FOOD:

As you know at Holistic Voice and on The Food Heals Podcast we believe that food heals! So I follow a very clean plant-based diet and it is extremely difficult for me to be in situations where I don’t have control over my food. As someone who starts every day with a green juice, has a salad and a smoothie for lunch and a healthy plant-based meal for dinner every day, going on a cruise without many vegetarian options can be really difficult. (And -side note- I live in Hollywood where there is a juice bar on every corner and more vegan restaurants than fast food joints so I’m a little spoiled because of the access I have to fresh, organic, gourmet plant-based cuisine at any time!)

Breakfast:
For breakfast on the cruise the only real options are the Windjammer buffet or some sugar-laden pastries from Cafe Promenade. The Windjammer buffet was disappointing for breakfast for anyone who likes to eat uber-healthy. Sure, there were your typical offerings like eggs, sausage, pancakes etc. But for someone who avoids meat, dairy and eggs at all costs the Windjammer did not have a lot of vegan-friendly options. After two days of eating sugary muffins and feeling terrible afterward, I decided to try the room service. I ordered the hash browns and the grilled tomatoes along with assorted pastries. The hash browns were stale and cold and the rest was a joke so I avoided breakfast the rest of the trip.

Vegan Heaven

Lunch:
Lunch was much better. The Windjammer buffet had many more options for lunch including lots of veggies and salad items, but the absolute BEST lunch was at Grand Cayman’s Bread and Chocolate– an amazing vegan restaurant that is a five minute walk from where the ship docks. It was raining the day we arrived at Grand Cayman so we missed our beach excursion and went straight for the healthy food!

The restaurant offers all day breakfast and the menu was full of healthy plant-based faire including waffles, pancakes, a Shepherd’s Pie and even a beet burger! I felt so much better after getting some healthy fuel in!

Vegan BLT - Best vegan restaurant in Grand Cayman: Bread and Chocolate

Dan got the tempeh BLT with grilled almond cheese and an almond milk latte.

As the rain poured down we warmed up with some amazing vegan potato mushroom soup followed by BLT sandwiches, breakfast tacos & coffee lattes with almond milk and I got my green juice! The staff was warm & friendly and I was so grateful to find my own little slice of heaven in the paradise of Grand Cayman!

Vegan tacos - Best vegan restaurant in Grand Cayman: Bread and Chocolate

I got the vegan tacos and a scrumptious green juice!

Dinner:
Dinner on the ship was top-notch. I was pleasantly surprised to find vegetarian options on all the dinner menus. I managed to get a delicious plant-based meal every night and then found out the cruise ship’s delicious little secret! Dan and I had dinner with Tim Paige and his wife, Sarah and they let us in on the secret vegan menu at King Lear. Turns out you can pre-order vegan options including appetizers, meals and deserts the day before and they will prepare it fresh the next night!
I was thrilled!

THE CONFERENCE:

The first night we had a nice meet & greet where we got to meet our fellow podcasters, and got an advance copy of Jared Easley and Kimanzi Constable’s new book, Stop Chasing Influencers: The True Path to Building Your Business & Living Your Dream. This was a great move since we had lots of time to relax over the next few days and actually read a book! (Us entrepreneurs usually only get to listen to audiobooks while working out or driving as we can’t usually sit still enough to actually read a book when we’d rather be crossing off tasks from our to-do lists.) I finished it in a few hours by the beach! I love that it is short, concise and to the point. There is no “fluff” – just hard core action steps, stories and tips to help you on your business path. A great addition to your biz book collection. (It’s yellow so looks really tropical sitting next to The Four Hour Work Week on the bookshelf!)

The first day of the conference was our first day at sea. As we cruised to Haiti and the rest of the ship layed out with daiquiris by the pool, it was all hard-core business for us “Podcast Paradisers.” We traded our drinks for laptops to absorb as much knowledge as possible from the entrepreneurs & podcasters we admired.

Donald Kelly– Donald’s focus was how to grow beyond iTunes (and he did in style in full costume & a Jamaican accent!) Major shout-out to Donald for using our Food Heals podcast artwork in one of his slides!
Top Takeaway- Ways to grow your podcast beyond iTunes include creating a press kit and bringing your press kit to meetups, Toastmasters, conferences and events. And NO ONE is above just the old fashioned way of giving out flyers!
About Donald- Known online as “The Sales Evangelist,” Donald is a sales coach and interviews some of the best sales, business and marketing experts on his podcast, The Sales Evangelist with Donald Kelly.
Tweetable: Tweet: Think about the message you want to get to the world & go out and share it! @DonaldCKelly @FoodHealsNation www.holisticvoice.org/paradise #podcast

Jill & Josh Stanton– Josh & Jill talked about building their business through Facebook groups and how to turn listeners into lifers.
Top Takeaway- A private Facebook page is much more powerful than a Facebook business page and less invasive than an email. When Josh & Jill started their Facebook group, that is when everything changed for their business. Themed posts can be automated and groups can help build authenticity and bring community members to join your membership site.
About Jill & Josh– The couple behind Screw The Nine to Five, Josh & Jill created a community where “anyone with a penchant for living life on their own terms can come and connect with other rebellious rule-breakers.”
Tweetable: Tweet: “If you really want it, you’ll MAKE the time!” Thx Josh & Jill! @screwthe9tofive @FoodHealsNation www.holisticvoice.org/paradise #podcastcruise

Chase Reeves– Chase focused on growth and posed the question, “What could you do to get one new person to listen?”
Top Takeaway– Make a huge list of everything you could do to gain one new listener or one new follower. Big or small – it doesn’t matter. Put them on a spreadsheet and measure their likelihood, effectiveness and results. This will help you decide what to focus on in order to grow.
About Chase– The Creative Director at Fizzle, Chase helps indie entrepreneurs make weekly progress on their business and hosts The Fizzle Show. My favorite part of his web site is this quote: “Luke Skywalker had Yoda; Cinderella had a fairy godmother; Jesse Pinkman had Walter White; and you’ve got us. :)”
Tweetable: Tweet: You don’t get to decide what your legacy is. Do your work @chase_reeves @FoodHealsNation www.holisticvoice.org/paradise #MayaAngelou #podcastcruise

Tim Paige– Tim’s presentation gave clear instructions on email list building and how to turn listeners into paying customers.
Top Takeaway– Give a specific lead magnet (free content) such as a PDF download of “Top Ten Superfoods to Heal Your Body,” in exchange for an email address. In your “Thank You” page don’t be generic! Instead offer them more value! (Don’t worry we are updating Holistic Voice and Food Heals Nation right now! :) Tim also said to do webinars at least once per week. 30-60% of people on webinars will buy the product.
About Tim– Tim is a husband and a father, first and foremost. Additionally he is also a voice-over artist, Conversion Educator at Lead Pages, and a podcast host.
Tweetable: Tweet: To do something meaningful in business, solve one person’s problem. Thx @TimThePaige @FoodHealsNation www.holisticvoice.org/paradise #podcastcruise

Chris Brogan– Chris covered the importance of email marketing and webinars and explained his 351K system. The 3 stands for breaking up three hours into 20 minute or so blocks and dedicating tasks from your to-do list to each block. The 5 stands for asking yourself, “What can I improve 5%?” The 1K stands for having 1,000 true fans. Imagine if you had 1,000 fans paying you $100 per month. (I’ll let you do the math.)
Top Takeaway– Inbox is gold. Give more value in your emails than in your blog. (Man I’m gonna have to write a looong email to give more value than this post! ;)) And, Chris advises that if you charge $20 for a webinar you will get more traffic than if you give a webinar for free.
About Chris- Chris Brogan is CEO of Owner Media Group , providing simple plans and projects for business success. He is also a highly sought after professional speaker and the New York Times bestselling author of eight books and counting, including his forthcoming book, Insider: Strategies and Secrets for Business Growth in the Age of Distractions.

Podcast Paradise Cruise 2015 with John Lee Dumas

Goofing off during the #PodcastCruise Conference

Andrew Warner– Andrew’s presentation revolved around the power of narrative and the fact that storytelling leads to action (over facts) which is something we feel very passionately about at Holistic Voice as well!
Top Takeaway– It’s OK to interrupt your guests. If they are going off on a tangent or taking the interview into a place you don’t want it to go, politely interrupt. (If you are bored, your audience is too!) It’s OK to say, “I’m sorry to interrupt but…” and explain your higher purpose for changing the subject.
About Andrew– Andrew is an entrepreneur who helps startups by running a site where proven entrepreneurs teach. He is the founder of Mixergy whose mission is to introduce you to doers and thinkers whose ideas and stories are so powerful that just hearing them will change you.
Tweetable: Tweet: “There’s no better way to leave an impact then #podcasting & spreading stories that matter.” Thanks @AndrewWarner www.holisticvoice.org/paradise

John Lee Dumas– John and Andrew showed us an example of a pre-interview where Andrew started off asking John what his goal for the interview was. When you know what the goal of the interview is, you as the interviewer can always bring it back to that goal.
Top Takeaway– It’s OK to get personal. It was really nice to see John very vulnerable and speak candidly about his experiences, his mistakes and how he got to where he is now- in business, in life and even in his love life! John expressed that he could not have built his business as large as he has without the help of Kate, his better half.
About John– John Lee Dumas is the founder & host of Entrepreneur On Fire, a top ranked business Podcast where he interview today’s most inspiring Entrepreneurs 7-days a week and was awarded “Best of iTunes 2013.” John has been featured in Forbes, Inc., and Time Magazine. Omar Zenhom & Nicole Baldinu– Omar and Nicole talked about how they built their business and the importance of a catchy intro in your podcast. (And theirs is catchy! Wonder what they would think of ours! “Side effects of this podcast may include increased health and vitality, thoughts of living longer, an increase in sexual activity, feelings of joy, cravings for kale & quinoa and a spike in tinder matches!“)
Top Takeaway– You don’t need to go to business school run a successful, extremely profitable business that you feel passionately about. And every failure is just setting you up for your next success! (They know because their first podcast failed. Then less than a year later their new show was voted “Best of iTunes!”)
About Omar & Nicole– Omar and Nicole are the team behind The $100 MBA which is a complete business education and community for $100. Both have a decade of education experience. As university educators they learned how to not only teach but how create and deliver lessons that actually foster learning and ensure comprehension and retention. During Omar’s time in education he served as an administrator and saw how NOT to form an institution of learning. Having a student-centered approach is at the forefront of The $100 MBA.
Tweetable- Tweet: “Be willing to do things others are not willing to do!” Thx @BizRepublic @FoodHealsNation www.holisticvoice.org/paradise #podcastcruise

Chris DuckerChris covered the importance of individuality in your business. “Doing it differently is better than doing it better,” says Chris. Make sure the business is unique and that you are solving a problem that your audience has. “Be original in everything that you do.”
Top Takeaway-Focus! “How many of you have unfinished blog posts sitting in your wordpress?”Chris asked.  (All hands in the room go up.) Chris advises entrepreneurs to do one thing at a time. The real definition FOCUS = Follow One Course Until Success. Time is our most valuable commodity and we’ve got to invest it wisely.

FINAL THOUGHTS:

The Podcaster’s Paradise Cruise was an incredible event. I loved meeting people, having cocktails in the sunshine, singing karaoke in the evenings and learning from the best! Combining vacation with business is actually something I like to do! Most Americans feel they need a vacation to get away from their jobs. I love my “job” so much that I don’t even consider it a “job.” Creating media that matters- whether it is through blogging, podcasting, filmmaking or video production– is my passion and I will do it anytime, anywhere! And doing it with a cocktail in hand on boat is not too shabby either 😉
