Behind-the-scenes of Food Heals: Drinking the Green Kool-aid

I first met the intrepid Laura Sands years ago at Erewhon Natural Foods Market. She was trying to sell me on a strange green powder but I wriggled my nose. “I already know all about greens,” I said. But then I tried the kool-aid-looking green concoction and decided to listen as she began to enlighten me with her truly miraculous story of holistic healing.

Laura explained that she had suffered from a devastating autoimmune disease called Scleroderma, a chronic connective tissue disorder that “hardened the skin”. In Scleroderma patients, overproduction of collagen within the body can cause such insurmountable symptoms as stiff, painful fingers, difficulty in breathing, Candida, loss of menstrual cycle, tightening of the jaw, cheeks and lips, and recession of the gums, just to name a few. Previous to Laura’s discovery of supernutrients — supergreens and superfoods that heal the body on a cellular level through nutrition — she had been told there was no cure for Scleroderma, and the only option offered was to start on a regimen of steroids to ease the symptoms.

This immediately struck a chord with me. My mother had suffered from Multiple Sclerosis, another debilitating autoimmune illness that all the doctors told us was without remedy. With MS, the immune system literally attacks itself, leaving the body vulnerable to sickness and disease. I was just in high school when my mom began to experience numbness in her hands and feet. Gradually she lost her ability to walk at all. No matter how many drugs the doctors prescribed, nothing could ease her pain. Each month brought a new specialist and a new prescription. My mother had to keep a journal just to write down all the dosages and names of the pills so that she wouldn’t overdose. The worst part was that with every new supposed ‘cure’ came a new side effect that left her weaker than ever. When the pain in her stomach became too much to bear, we finally received a new diagnosis: my mother had cancer. She had just months to live.

My mother, the beautiful Patricia Ann Doughty Biggar passed away in 2004, one month before I graduated college.

So when lovely Laura Sands stood there in the organic produce section, a clear-eyed, articulate and fully functional miracle of recovery, my ears pricked up at once. “I have never felt better in my life,” I heard her saying. What was her secret? How did she beat such odds when so many others had succumbed to the exhaustion and heartbreaking symptoms of an autoimmune disease?

“I have never felt better in my life,” I heard her saying. What was her secret?

Laura told me that although the prevailing view maintained genetics was the primary cause of Scleroderma, recent studies had focused on the role of diet and nutrition as contributing factors. Diets high in processed, caloric and acidic foods create an environment so toxic that the immune system cannot fend against everyday invaders that it would normally conquer with ease.

Having always been against medication and drug therapies as a means to healing, Laura rejected her doctors’ proclamations and decided to take a holistic route. She experimented with several holistic therapies to try to get the disease under control: colonics, hyperbaric oxygen treatments, and acupuncture. But it wasn’t until Laura crossed paths with Josh and Scott Malin, the co-creators of VITAFORCE and owners of Dynamics of Nature, that she turned a new leaf in her healing.

Upon the recommendation of Josh and Scott Malin, Laura began to focus on healing at the cellular level.  To begin the healing process she would have to alkalize her body and replenish her cells with an overload of micronutrients.  She began by taking VITAFORCE, the superfood multivitamin green powder, twice a day, in a fresh juice or smoothie.  VITAFORCE provided her cells with vitamins and minerals from the whole food ingredients, live plant enzymes, thousands of antioxidants, phytonutrients, probiotics, and prebiotics. To alkalize her body, Laura adopted a plant-based diet, which meant eliminating all acid-forming animal products, including mucous-forming dairy.

“I felt a difference in my energy within the first 3 days, and over the next 12 months, my health continued to improve. My depression and chronic fatigue began to dissipate, my digestion and elimination returned to normal, my menstrual cycles were normal, my lungs finally cleared out and I could take a deep breathe with ease. Also, the inflammation and pain in my fingers had decreased!” Laura exclaimed.

I thought about what I knew to be true, that the body always tries to reach homeostasis, or perfect balance. It made sense to me that once Laura began to provide her cells with the right combination of nutrients derived from whole food ingredients, her immune system started to do its job once again, Now free from the terrible burden of acidic foods, chemicals and synthetics, her body was able to begin to heal itself. The combination of Laura’s alkalizing vegan diet, the complete whole food nutrients of VITAFORCE, and her positive attitude, allowed her to win her drug-free battle against Scleroderma!

Laura Sands gives a holistic health seminar at Grassroots Market in Pasadena, CA. Portions of the seminar will be seen in the documentary, "Food Heals."

Scleroderma had once forced Laura to leave Chiropractic College and abandon her dream of becoming a Certified Chiropractic Sports Physician, but today she is studying to be a Certified Health Specialist, Certified Nutritional Counselor, and Certified Naturopathic Doctor. She is currently a Health & Wellness Coach for Dynamics of Nature and Grassroots Market in South Pasadena, CA.  She is an advocate for natural healing and educates the public through seminars and lectures. Not only did Laura become a life-long friend, but she is also the producer of Food Heals, my feature documentary film about holistic healing. She changed my life, uplifted my spirit and showed me the true spirit of a fighter — and I have been drinking her Green Kool-Aid ever since!
