Billy Bob Thornton’s candid thoughts on losing a loved one

This video brings tears to my eyes. If you have lost a loved one you can absolutely relate to what Billy Bob is saying. I really appreciate his candid honesty. “I am 50% happy and 50% sad at any given moment,” is a statement that I completely understand and agree with. It has been over 10 years since I lost my mother and it has been 7 years since I lost my father and although I have wonderful friends, a wonderful husband and a passion for what I do, they are still never far from my mind. My sadness is always just under the surface, even during the happiest of times.

People say that time heals all wounds. I have found that be be true in cases of ending of romantic relationships and in other areas of my life. But I have not found that to be true about the loss of a loved one. All time does is give you more opportunities to learn new ways of grieving, coping and honoring the loved one you have lost. But I do not think the pain ever goes away. As Billy Bob shared, “When you lose someone like that, you won’t ever get over it. The more you know that and embrace it, the better off you are.”

He concludes with “As an artist, that’s where a lot of your stuff comes from. You keep honoring those people forever by  singing that song or writing that movie or doing that part in a movie or writing a book or whatever it is that has a sadness or a melancholy or a fear in it. Those are the things that keep them alive.”

I couldn’t agree more. Part what what I have learned through losing my parents at a young age is that I must transform my sadness into art, into my life’s work and into my passions. It is the reason I am making the film, Food Heals; it is the reason I have this web site: to honor them: to not let their deaths be in vein: and to heal myself.
